I decided to take a quick break from my hiatus to post a mixtape that I created recently. It’s a random assortment of tracks I liked from 2009 that I put together as a gift for my sis. I did a similar one at the end of ‘08 and think I may just turn it into an annual thing. Anyhow, it flows pretty nicely and so I thought I’d share it with friends as well…

David: Hey, Paula.

Paula: Yeah?

David: I gotta tell you something. I’m really excited about it. Uh, for the first time today, I woke up, I came to the store, and I feel confident to say to you that if you don’t take this Michael McDonald DVD that you’ve been playing for two years straight off, I’m going to kill everyone in the store and put a bullet in my brain.

Paula: David, what do you suggest we play?

David: I don’t care. Anything. I would rather… I would rather watch “Beautician and the Beast”. I would rather listen to Fran Drescher for eight hours than have to listen to Michael McDonald. Nothing against him, but if I hear “Yah Mo B There” one more time, I’m going to “Yah Mo” burn this place to the ground.

Paula: You’re such a smartass. Get back on the floor.
[Paula walks away]

David: [cough-mutters] Ah-fuck you!

Posting a playlist today. Over the past couple days at work I’ve been letting iTunes run the background, playing through a pool of tracks I have just recently come across in the last week or so. I’d been shuffling it up on the regular, and it slowly dawned on me that a lot of this stuff blends together pretty well and so I thought I’d line it up and share.

It starts out pretty mellow(/Feist-y) and maintains course so you have to perhaps let it settle in a little bit, but it makes for good background noise at the least. Give it a download, let it run a couple times through, and you may see what I mean…

Audio Found Akin mix (CLICK HERE to Download Entire Playlist)

Track listing:
*DFS recommendation
1. Bon Iver - The Park (Feist cover)
2. The Constantines feat. Feist - Islands in the Stream (Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers cover)
*3. Feist and Ben Gibbard - Train Song
*4. Andrew Bird - Way Out West
5. Andrew Bird - Nyatiti
*6. Frankel - Know (Nick Drake cover)
7. Emily Wells - Symphony 6 Fair Thee Well and the Requiem Mix
8. Arcade Fire - Wake Up
*9. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - 40 Day Dream
10. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Home
Note: I am hoping to check out Edward Sharpe at the Independent next Tuesday and am looking for company.
11. She & Him - Sweet Darlin’ (with Jason Schwartzman) yes, that Jason Shwartzman, and yes that is Zooey Deschanel’s band
12. TUnE-YaRdS - Fiya …band spelling is not the only unique thing about this artist

Another quick TV-inspired post today as Entourage closed last night’s episode with a track by Yeasayer, who have been one of the more interesting listens of my summer. This reminded me that Pitchfork.com had posted one of their Pitchfork Festival performances, and so I just went back to check it out. Aside from the fact that lead-man Chris Keating looks like Emilio Estevez from Men At Work, it was definitely one of the most dynamic performances of the festival. So check it out below, and below that is the song featured in the show.

Yeasayer - Wait for the Summer (Live at Pitchfork Festival ‘09)
One of Mad Men’s greatest strengths as a drama is its ability to use its endings to give you a good slap in the face. And as you sit there stunned by the impact, the music creeps and makes it sting a little sweeter. I was watching an old episode from season 2 this weekend, and came across the gem below. I won’t get into describing the scene here, but I think this track is a good example of the fact that the show does a good job of capturing the age in all it’s sad and smoky glory.

<img src=http://gkm5rq.blu.livefilestore.com/y1pkG3QG0VRW_Y3m5dyc_vyzH8jz-CyxTBZYclV3_FjyEe-SMPROONjkukx3fBYzJcKPL7g-G2-A3QXvatDE6HwQ4bwJV6L-iXW/radiohead.JPG
“I mean, obviously, there’s still something great about the album. It’s just, for us, right now, we need to get away from it a bit.”…”In Rainbows was a particular aesthetic and I can’t bear the idea of doing that again. Not that it’s not good, I just can’t… bear… that.”
-Thom Yorke

Ever since the announcement a week or so ago that Radiohead no longer plans to produce full length LPs, I’ve been struggling to be open-minded and reconcile that this isn’t necessarily bad news. While I respect that this gives Yorke and Co. more flexibility in pursuing creative directions without being constrained by a single aesthetic, I can’t help being somewhat disappointed (especially in the wake of In Rainbows) to hear this from a band who has been perhaps the greatest contemporary contributor to the album form.

Which brings us to the latest submission of this new era, a single release “These Are My Twisted Words” (below). Now I wouldn’t be one to complain about a steady stream of new material, however, this song doesn’t do much to assuage fan apprehension over the lack of structure in this new mode of output. It’s not bad, but it just kind of meanders, like it’s a garage jam in some places. In it’s defense it does carry a pretty powerful mood, but in short, it doesn’t stand on it’s own as a single.

Anyhow, here’s to hoping that this ends up being a period of stirring creativity for the band, and provides them with what sounds like a much-needed respite from the pressures of living up to their own artistic standards. And one can hope that it’s not too long before they find the inspiration to undertake another full-length effort too.

Any thoughts?

Dust off your highballs for the return of Mad Men, which is kicking off its third season this Sunday, thankfully, despite an off-season contractual limbo between AMC and the show’s creator. Rumor has it that they’ll be airing the premier on the jumbotron in Times Square, but I’ll be perfectly happy to enjoy it from my couch with an old-fashioned in hand.

Below is the seldom-heard Aceyalone version of the theme track “A Beautiful Mine”. Cheers.

P.S. Fans of the show may want to check out this playlist posted by the blog Pop Tarts Suck Toasted

Ever since the first trailer for Where The Wild Things Are was released at the end of March, it has been highest atop my most anticipated viewing list. With a formula including Spike Jonze as Director, Dave Eggers on script-writing (partnered with Jonze), and Karen O tasked with the soundtrack, the potential for greatness is heady. Even as I write this, the furr on the back of my neck is standing up.

As the movie’s currently scheduled Oct 16th release approaches, the powers that be have stoked the fire with another trailer release just last week (watch it below). While this trailer opening didn’t give me the same chills as the first one, it did it’s job to reinforce my excitement. On another note, I also just heard that Eggers and Jonze are releasing a new extended version of the book to coincide with the movie release. The cover (below) looks pretty cool.

Below is the Arcade Fire track from the trailer(s), as well as a song by Patrick Watson titled “Where The Wild Things Are”. In light of the fact that Karen O is writing “pretty much the whole” soundtrack, it’s may be safe to assume Watson’s track won’t be featured, but it’s still a fittingly awesome song.

Last night I went to check out up-and-coming Brooklyn band Elizabeth and the Catapult at Cafe du Nord, and was thoroughly entertained to see them coming to terms with their small rise, almost giddy to close their first tour out west with the modest-but-full crowd in the bohemian basement.

We had the pleasure of having Elizabeth’s mom sitting above our right shoulder and so all-in-all it was a pretty accepting crowd. While I’m a fan of the single “Taller Children” off their debut album, I have to say that I’d rather see them go the direction of the funkier “Tell me in the morning” (video below) which for some reason did not find itself on their album, nor last night’s show. That being said, they gained some points with a soulful cover of “I’m so tired”. Check em out
