It’ll be 5 o’clock somewhere.

Dust off your highballs for the return of Mad Men, which is kicking off its third season this Sunday, thankfully, despite an off-season contractual limbo between AMC and the show’s creator. Rumor has it that they’ll be airing the premier on the jumbotron in Times Square, but I’ll be perfectly happy to enjoy it from my couch with an old-fashioned in hand.

Below is the seldom-heard Aceyalone version of the theme track “A Beautiful Mine”. Cheers.

Bringing it back: Ratatat Remixes (…vol2)

For some reason, a number of occasions have arisen lately where I have been compelled to bring up the Ratatat Remixes only to find my friends were unaware of their existence. This is typically followed by some hand-wringing and the admonition that they should find that shit. And so, in the spirit of leading a horse to water I decided this morning to dig up the download link. Hip Hop and Ratatat fans alike, drink up HERE.

If the link looks shady, well, that’s because it is. Totally kidding, the mixtape was released for free and this is the same way it found it’s way into my possesion. Simply avoid the offers to “make $4800 a month!” by entering the 4 verification letters in the upper right hand corner, and the click “Regular Download”. Thank me later.

Take a sip…

Blu: A New Favo(u)rite Rapper

I recently came across LA rapper Blu and became an instant fan. Frequently backed by soul-drenched production from DJ/producer Exile, Blu delivers clever words and well-crafted songs with a cool delivery that evokes a similarity to admitted-influence Common.

My first Blu acquisition was his latest mixtape “HerFavoriteColo(u)r” (free download link below), which was actually fully produced by Blu himself and features jazzy samples and film soundbites that add to the emotional intrigue of the project. Even at a half-hour’s lenth, it is a bit wandering, but there are some highlights (see “Amnesia” below).

I also recently copped the “Below the Heavens” album produced by Exile and it should be regarded as a hip-hop classic. If you are a fan of the genre, it should not be ovelooked. Blu is prolific as a guest contributor as well, which can be referenced by his relevance on okayplayer.com (his tag font is practically the same size as ?uestlove who is a primary founder of the site), so he should be a name that continues to be heard in the future. Just don’t pronounce the “e”…
