The smoky soul of Mad Men


One of Mad Men’s greatest strengths as a drama is its ability to use its endings to give you a good slap in the face. And as you sit there stunned by the impact, the music creeps and makes it sting a little sweeter. I was watching an old episode from season 2 this weekend, and came across the gem below. I won’t get into describing the scene here, but I think this track is a good example of the fact that the show does a good job of capturing the age in all it’s sad and smoky glory.

Sixties Soul in Style: Raphael Saadiq


Let me start by saying I’m a sucker for old-school soul. That’s why I love what Raphael Saadiq does. Not only does he create fresh tracks that are at the same time ancient, but also finds ways to carry his retro stylings into visual mediums. Take for example, this video below that was dropped just a week or two ago. The only tell that he was a former member of Tony Toni Tone is his literal sex request.
